I've never understood why External Editor doesn't just use a blank line to separate the headers from the body (like, you know, email (RFC 5322)).
I'm guessing that they wanted to allow for messages with no headers. That is, what if someone :wq's a file that has in it:
==== begin example Jim: Let's have lunch on Monday. ==== end example Does it try to pass "Jim" has a header?
