Hi David and Anne, your answer, David, is correct, it's the missing headers, footers, prefixes and suffixes, and it turns out as "null", because of the following configuration in struts-config.xml
<message-resources parameter="com.mycom.resources.Messages" null="false"/> which prints out null String objects as "null".
