In this case it is a good choice to go for it - we even use nightly builds
as they have a lot of bugs already fixed. The reason is that Struts 1.1.
has so many improvements over 1.0 that I wouldn't go for that version
anymore and the beta has a really good and stable condition

Isn't tiles a part of Struts 1.1 (which is still in beta)? If it is still
in beta, isn't it a bit risky to use yet? (my gut instinct is to only use
the final release stuff)

Easest is to to tiles. Templeates are depracted.
One set of tiles docs is in the basicPortal.sf.net doco zip.
Look up the tiles.pdf in DOC folder.
You can have a tilte defined in and action via a tiles.put().
