Hi MK, America was dicovered by Columbus in search of route to India.
If i remember history well..here it goes... Those days ( somewhere around 13th or 14th Century ) , Asia was tarde hub of all commodities and which was very scare in the europe .In this India and China were mainly popular apart from this japan , mangolia were popular .For the europeans the trade route was thru persia ( now middle east )....remember that India was that time ruled by mughals. Particularly Indian markets were famous for spices ( cardamom , cloves, elaichi ) , cotton , elephant tusks , silk , and other hand made articles.These persians made it really tough for europeans to access Indian markets. So the european ( british , spain , portugal , france ) sailors set off to find different path to India . In this voyage different sailors different islands and other countries which was less know about in the other part of the world. Columbus ( a spanish sailor ) landed in land thought he had landed in India. But that was the Americas where he landed and the islands near to that was actually what we call as caribean islands or West Indies . He thought so because he was told Indians were black in complexion and he thought so. He thought he had discovered a new route to India and landed in India but he had discovered a new land in the globe which was called America . Still the ethnic , native people in N.America are called Red Indians. Finally Vasco da gama ( a portugal sailor ) landed in kerala coast ( calicut or kozhikode ) and there by it let flow of europeans to India and other south east asian countries and also the far east.
