In one of his December articles in Hindustan Times ( With Malice towards One and All ), Khushwant Singh wrote a very interesting article on Fraud Religious Leaders and suggested that India should be renamed 'Pakhandistan' . You may label me a pessimist, but I agree with him. It seems lately, cheating and fraud seem to be part of our culture and everyone is 'OK' with it. While the whole of Corporate India may say that Satyam is an 'aberration' , we all know the 'Truth'. Most Balance Sheets across Corporate India are cooked to some extent. You may not even be aware of this happening in your own company. In fact those who don't cook their Balance Sheets at all are an 'aberration' . But am I limiting this cheating and fraud to Corporate India alone? Daily the Taxi and Auto drivers cheat passengers, the Raddiwala cheats you, the Fruit & Vegatable vendors cheat you, the grocer cheats you, the Hardware store cheats you, the Managing Committee of your Housing Society cheats you..... Need I go on? At a higher level the Consumer companies cheat you, the Politicians cheat you, the Bureaucrats cheat you, the Police cheat you, the Judiciary cheats you (remember 'Tareekh pe Tareeekh').. ... Am I pessimist? I don't think so. I know my country has produced eminent and great citizens. I am also aware of my colleagues in the Social Service Sector doing a great job and of the numerous upright citizens fighting for the rights of the downtrodden. But as long as the majority of us Indians are 'OK' with all this cheating and fraud, what's wrong in renaming India 'Pakhandistan' ?
