KIDS WITH CAMERAS
INTRODUCTION:
As a young teenager in high school, photography was my outlet to
express myself and to be free. Through photos, we can tell stories, learn
about each other and learn about ourselves. Photography can also be used to
learn and express language.
For the past year, I have been working as a teacher at Olcott Memorial High
School in Chennai. This is a free school that caters to underprivileged
children. I work as an English Language Lab teacher providing access to
English communication through multimedia. I also coordinate a young women’s
leadership program known as Pudhumai Pengal.
The goal of ‘Kids with Cameras’ is to empower youth through art. Hands-on,
creative projects are the best way to teach children and to learn from them.
A series of projects will be given to students and the camera will be their
tool to find answers. For example, students in the ELL will be given take
home assignments with topics such as family, friends or environment. After
compiling their images into individual storybooks, students’ will present
their work to the class in English.
Similarly, Pudhumai Pengal participants will be given assignments to explore
and capture their community and relationships on film. Using photographs
will be a powerful method for them to define the bigger picture and to
connect and communicate with each other.
REQUEST:
I am reaching out to all of you because I need cameras and film to get this
program off the ground. We can only use film that can be store processed
as opposed to dark room processing. Cameras can be either digital or film.
As long as the camera is in working condition, it will be useful.
If you can donate either film and/or cameras, please contact me at
narayana.sh...@gmail.com. If you are not in a position to donate these
things, then please donate your time in passing this message along to your
circle of friends/family.
