Personally, being a little paranoid, I wouldn't open up my web server at all.
I use ssh tunnelling to access it remotely. PuTTY works will from windows.
Just keep it one your USB keychain.
And even then I've set my router to relay the ssh from a non-standard port
to the internal machine. I also run DenyHosts ( denyhosts.sourceforge.net).
This blocks out the bot dictionary attacks pretty effectively.

You can also access anything you want inside the network or administer
your machine remotely too. VNC work ok for the remote desktops too.
Even working on mvpmc.
