I've revised this page on the wiki:
http://mvpmc.wikispaces.com/commandline

that documents the mvpmc command line options. Here's what was done:

I updated the list of options to match a recent mvpmc binary.

I formatted the options into a table and added descriptions that match
or are close to the descriptions produced by mvpmc -h. I edited the
descriptions to make them more consistent.

I grouped the related options together, such as all MythTV client options.

I tried to format the arguments to options in a more consistent way,
such as listing all the accepted possibilities for enumerated arguments,
and using a different font treatment to distinguish literal arguments
from symbolic arguments.

I changed the references to "server" arguments to "server-IP" to
emphasize that an IP address must be supplied.

(It might be helpful to roll some of these changes into the compiled-in
help text.)

I removed all the square brackets that were improperly used around
arguments in the long-form help text.

I cleaned up the long-form help text wording and grammar.

Here's what's missing:

A few options had their (compiled-in) defaults defined wither by the -h
text or the previous wiki text, but for most they aren't specified. I
guessed at some and left "?" in the Defaults column for the rest.

> -a aspect aspect ratio (4:3, 4:3cco, 16:9)

The wiki shows more choices for the arguments than the 3 listed in the
compiled-in help text. Which is correct?

The wiki also asks:

> I think this is changing in the current nightly builds to split out
> the WSS functionality ( any thoughts ?)

> --vlc-vopts opt [dvd|svcd|vcd|none] VLC video stream quality
> --vlc-aopts opt [mp3|flac] VLC audio stream encoding

I'm guessing "opt" is a required argument on both of these options,
despite the use of square brackets.

> --emulate server IP address or ?

"?" seems like a poor choice for a literal symbol. Until I read the long
description in the wiki I though it was just a place holder for an
unknown argument.

The wiki didn't specify, but I seem to recall reading elsewhere that
this option enables emulation of a client for the Hauppauge MediaMVP
media server, so I updated the wiki description to reflect that.

> --rfb-mode mode (0, 1, 2)
> --flicker flicker mode on
> --no-wss disable Wide Screen Signalling(WSS)
> --vlc-vopts opt [dvd|svcd|vcd|none] VLC video stream quality
> --vlc-aopts opt [mp3|flac] VLC audio stream encoding
> --vlc-vb rate VLC video stream bitrate (Mb)
> --vlc-ab rate VLC audio stream bitrate(Kb)
> -H display 12 hour clock
> -y server mythtv DB server IP address
> -p password mythtv mysql password

None of these options have a long description on the wiki.

> --rfb-mode mode (0, 1, 2)

Is this related to the VNC settings?

> --startup (replaytv, mythtv, mclient)

The wiki lists more choices for the argument to this option. Which is
correct?

> -b path path to NFS mounted mythtv ringbuf directory

We should add a note to the wiki that this option is obsolete, unless
you are running MythTV prior to version X (whatever X is).

> -y server mythtv DB server IP address
> -u username mythtv mysql username
> -p password mythtv mysql password
> -T table mythtv mysql database name

Of these settings, only -T is described, and even it doesn't explain
what purpose or benefit is served by having mvpmc directly connect to
the database. That should be covered when long descriptions are written
for these.

> --startup filesystem:file=pathname
> This startup option will start mvpmc in the File Browser mode in the
> specified directory.

The above is from the wiki. The -h help text doesn't list this option.
Is it still supported?

> -o [composite] or [svideo] [stereo] or [passthru]
>
> -o output output device for video (composite or svideo) and / or for
> audio (stereo or passthru)

I'm confused by this definition. Is it possible to list multiple -o
options on the command line?

mvpmc -o composite -o passthru

> -t [file]
>
> The xml filename of the theme file this can be located on the mvpmc
> or on a remote drive.

The wiki had the above text, with "drive" linked to a page that talked
about NFS, CIFS, and UPnP.

But isn't this the dongle.bin.xml file that is loaded via TFTP right
after the dongle.bin.config file is loaded?

Can the argument be either a file, with is first tried via TFTP, or a
path to a mounted file system, or does this override the TFTP loading
behavior and any argument supplied is assumed to be a locally accessible
path?
