THANK YOU Martin!! The cacls command was the key in figuring out this problem. I had previously set simple file sharing on, enabled the guest account and granted what I thought was the correct access to the directory, but with no joy.
The beauty of cacls is you can directly grant access with the /g parameter and now I'm in business.
