When I first was setting up mvpmc, I was having some problems with shares, and was trying UPnP. Sometimes I could see the server and sometimes not. I didn't pursue it further because I got sharing to work and because of problems I was having with UPnP's performance. I'm not sure what the difference is exactly, but I have a lot of CDs, and browsing the list with SMB works fine.
