I tried to add some code to give an error, and did succeed on printing out the
name of the file when it was successful, but on failure it did not print out 
and 
crashed, I almost think that someplace before my code it was trying to open the 
file but I was unable to figure out what exactly was happening.   This is for 
the simple case of everything exists but the actual file (ie the data directory 
is correct).
