I'm sure this is probably an FAQ question, but I know so little about
this topic in general that I don't know how to look up the answer in
an FAQ. Any general guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I use MVPMC to stream the following content from my Ubuntu 7.10 media server:

* "DVD-quality" MPEG copies of DV movies

* MythTv SD movies

* Xvid AVI's

  * I configure VLC to transcode using the SVCD option.

I'm using powerline networking, and my bandwidth is between 25 and 30
Mb/s. From what I've read, this is plenty fast enough to stream *any*
SD content, and it does a very good job of playing MythTV movies. The
problem is that the MPEG and Xvid movies are always choppy and out of
sync. It's as if I don't have enough bandwidth to properly stream
them.

So I guess I have the following questions:

1. What property should I tweak to make my media files to make them
more easily "streamable"?

2. What format do you guys recommend for movies? If Xvid is ok, then
what settings do you use when you encode your AVI's?

  * If it's at all possible, I would like to stay with the Xvid code
for my files because it's widely supported on Linux.

Thanks in advance!

Tom Purl
