I don't know what the actual problem is, but
if you put a symbolic link to the file with some other extension (say AVI or 
WMV) and you have VLC enabled, then it will play the file through VLC, I have 
used that to play MPEG's that have too high of bit rate.

You could also transcode just the audio on that recording (given the resolution 
works, just the audio needs to be fixed) and then it should work fine.   I have 
a script that should work for that, and have used it to just transcode the 
audio 
on US ATSC SD/ac3 recordings to SD/mp3 (on a 2.0 Ghz Opteron it takes about 5 
minutes per hour of recording), the script will also transcode HD stuff down to 
mvpmc compatible mpeg streams (but takes quite a bit longer).   I have the 
script running automatically as a user job after a recording finishes on all of 
my HD and SD ATSC recordings, though I have successfully watched SD/AC3 stuff 
without freezes (though with audio out of sync).
