I have horrible sync problems with my Hauppauge MediaMVP. Pausing and
un-pausing fix the problem some times but only for a little bit. Watching a
video it gets progressively farther out of sync and watching the video get
farther out of sync without pausing to correct it will cause the video to
freeze, skip ahead and then resume as if the stream continued but the
MediaMVP froze.
I am running mvpmc 0.3.4 and a VLC stream server. I have Xvid videos in my
gallery that are typically 700x460 and 1200kbps and 29.97 fps. These videos
play great on a MediaGate system, no sync problems at all. I have only used
the mvpmc software on my MediaMVP because the Windows program that comes
with it crashes in XP Pro every time I run it. So basically I am not sure
what is causing my MediaMVP to go out of sync.
I found my VLC server was running a close to 100% CPU usage to stream Xvid
on the AMD Sempron I had. The OS is Ubuntu 7.10 and I suspect that VLC is
badly compiled on Ubuntu and could be the cause of the problem. I found that
mencoder that comes with Ubuntu could only encode to Xvid using my settings
at about 15fps, I switched the the binary mencoder that comes with KnoppMyth
and using the same settings could encode to Xvid at 34fps. More then double
the frame rate that the crappy Ubuntu mencoder could do. I suspect the VLC
comes with Ubuntu also suffers from poor compiling options. I thought of
re-compiling VLC but I have not been able to find what KnoppMyth developers
did to make mencoder perform so well. I upgraded my CPU to a dual core
Athlon 4400+ and now mencoder is able to encode Xivd using my settings at
over 80fps using a single core, more then double what it was able to do
before. VLC is now streaming at 50% CPU usage of one core.
I upgraded my network to giga bit, although my MediaMVP is only 100Mbps the
faster NIC's in the server and the faster switch ensure that my sync problem
is not do to an overloaded network. My network now typically will sit at
about 5% bandwidth.
I have gone through all the help files I can find about fixing sync problems
on the VLC server side, I don't think the problem is there. I think the
MediaMVP is the problem. I turned down the output stream quality to close to
320x240 and now I have a very small video window on the MediaMVP but still
the sync problem continues. I have tried it with and without the
--sout-transcode-audio-sync option and it does not help.
I am trying to telnet into the VLC stream server and connect xine or mplayer
to the output stream to see if the server can keep the video in sync or not.
This web site http://www.videolan.org/doc/streaming-howto/en/ch05.html shows
some information about how to telnet in and configure a stream but not the
same way that mvpmc is using.
Can anyone give me some tips on telneting into the VLC stream to test the
output with xine or mplayer?
Can anyone give me some tips on fixing sync problem that are not documented
on the http://www.mvpmc.org or http://mvpmc.wikispaces.com web sites?
I like the looks of the MediaMVP system and the remote is very nice. I
really appreciate all the work the mvpmc developers are doing to make this
open source project and I think it will be great when version 1 is released,
but if I cannot find a way to solve this sync problem I will have to replace
the MediaMVP with a MediaGate system.
