Turns out the client-bridged mode of the DD-WRT isn't really a true 
transparent bridge and does some funny stuff with the mac addresses of 
devices behind it.....

Short answer, the client bridge mode is the cause of some of the problems I 
was having and is why this doesn't currently work, WDS and bridged repeater 
modes are supposed to work properly but haven't had a chance to test them out 
yet.
