The HDPVR doesn't have any capability for playback at all. It receives analog video in via component, and sends a compressed digitized H.264 byte stream out a USB port. It performs the inverse function of a MediaMVP. The HDPVR is a device which should not need to exist in a sane world. It's only purpose is to get around draconian DRM crap by using the "analog hole". A device like the Silicon Dust HDHomeRun can record digital cable very efficiently but can't get at encrypted content. Set top boxes manufactured by Motorola/Scientific Atlanta can sometimes decrypt the stream and send it out over firewire but cable operators often deliberately disable this using "5C" encryption. What's becoming an increasingly popular solution is to have a high powered set top box decompress the compressed digital cable stream and convert it to analog component video to deliver it directly to the HDPVR, which is another high powered set top box which just redigitizes the analog feed back into compressed digital video with only a small loss in quality. Global warming++.
