Yes, you're absolutely right on all counts.

Nvidia Ion support is a subset of general nvidia VDPAU support, which
is implemented in the MythTV development branch and some unofficial
patches for the stable branch.  There's a lot of buzz about this.
People who have gotten it working are generally very happy with it.

We're almost there.

The one I've been looking at is the Acer Aspire Revo, which is out in
Europe and Australia but I haven't found a vendor in the States yet.
