I thought mwlib may be interested in the following publication which
evaluates a number of offline MediaWiki markup parsers, and discusses the
formal properties of the markup language:

I do not find the article particularly readable, and I think their idea of
"compliance" is more subjective than might be expected of that word, but
it is an interesting perspective on what makes a good parser, and how well
each parser fulfills that.
