upgrading to a newer reportlab version might not be as painful as I initially thought. I still do not really want to do that since this involves a lot of testing. But you are certainly free to do so on your local install:

Take a look at the merge-with-upstream.sh script in the root folder of mwlib.ext. Running that will merge with upstream. You still need to edit some files b/c you'll get a couple of conflicts which can't be automerged. Merging manually shouldn't be too hard though.
