A beta by definition is still in the testing process so you have to view it that way. Always air on the side of caution if you are in any doubt - take regular backups and always consider your own worse case scenario. Ironically you could be the person that identifies the major bug that wipes out all your of data :).
Typically I use live data, just I make sure before and after any significant or major changes I take a backup. I am a little more paranoid about backups during a beta phase than I am using a final version.
