John, A lot of people use the Weekly goal radio button as a hack for exactly this type of sorting. You can simply set "This task is a goal for" and select Week and these items will then become your daily to-do list.
Personally I've created a nice filter that sorts everything by Due Date but filters out anything with a Start Date in the future so that's it's easy to get a Today view.
