Sorry I did not understand the request. Why you want to return to
*task notes*. Did you mean task tree?

Anyway:

1) Ctrl+Down/Up was specially designed  to select new task while keep
the current option activated.
2) You can always select task try by Ctr+1. Press it again and you
switch to notes.
