I looked into phones carefully when my contract came to an end, and went with the HTC Touch Diamond2.
I can thoroughly recommend it. I run MLO on it without - so far - any problems at all. The Touchflo interface hides most of Windows Mobile, though you can still 'get at' things you have to. After an MDC Vario III it's smaller, lighter and more powerful - and I don't miss the sliding keyboard at all! Hope this helps.
