Lisa, regarding issue 1 (empty file)... how are you typically starting MLO?
Are you using a shortcut icon or something like that? I've observed eactly the same, and I'm always starting my mlo file using a link with zoom= and task= elements in it. In my case the tags seem to have changed. Because, I just updated the arguments of zoom= and task= and since then it works as before. Just an idea...
