I used to use Active Words as well a few years back. It was a nice app
but I think I stopped using it because it had a high system overhead
and also it didn't seem to be very actively developed. Abandoned it in
favour of apps like Launchy and AutoHotkey.

I think you're right, it would be a lot more intuitive than keyboard
shortcuts, but, as with Active Words, I would worry about the system
resources it might require. It might go against the "lean and mean"
ethos of MLO.

It's amazing how quickly you remember the keyboard shortcuts if you're
using them all the time - it's like muscle memory in sport, you don't
think about what keys you're pressing after a while.
