Istruggled most with understanding the differences between the
structuring features in the Outline view. In the MLO help I couldn't
find a simple overview so I compiled the list below from different
chapters of the MLO help (certainly not complete).

I think the confusion, and the difficulty, is that the To-Do list is very dynamic and can be configured to show whatever the user likes. Parent Tasks, Folders, Projects, all can be shown in To-do view depending on the filter.

=============
PARENT TASKS
Tasks that have subtasks show up in To-Do list after all their
subtasks are completed.

Perhaps a better way to state this is that Parent Tasks do not show up in the Active Filter until all of the subtasks are completed. Views that have other filters set will show parent tasks.

FOLDERS
Just containers, not shown in To-Do view.
Do not show up in the To-Do list.

Same as above - Folders will show up depending on what the Filter setting is.

PROJECTS
In general terms, any Task that has Subtasks.

Projects are just tasks that have the Project checkbox selected in the Properties pane. They don't have to have subtasks. Conversely, regular tasks can have subtasks and not be considered projects.
