I agree that the way filters/views can be applied does need an overhaul. I suspect that what we have now is a reflection of the way the filtering functionality has evolved gradually over time. If a redesign could make it more simple to filter by all criteria on the fly then that could be a killer feature for MLO. I would bet that a lot of people are having the same experience as you Richard creating an ever increasing number of views because it's easier than have to apply the filters every time. In practice most people would probably only need a small number of core views if they could apply seldom used filters more easily.
