Mike, regarding the hide option there are a few easy solutions (a) Structure your outline by two top-level-parents (let's say "active system" and "someday/maybe") and use the zoom function to focus on "active system" only.
(b) Or, activate "Hide the branch in to-do" and you at least won't see someday/maybe's in your active to-do views (c) Or, in to-do you can set a filter like ParentName<>"someday/maybe" (or however your folder is named like) And there are probably a few solutions more...
