I got MLO + Wine + Cloud Sync to work without installing IE. It looks to me like a problem with Wine's built-in msxml3 library. I installed the MSXML 3 redistributable and forced Wine to use the Windows Native msxml3.dll when running MLO and sync'd. I've done it on two Linux systems, one running Debian (Lenny) and another running Ubuntu 10.04.
