I use flags for grouping and focus. Focus might involve red flagging the next three tasks and having that as a filtered view The thing I find useful about flags is that you can only have one per task so it's easier to switch from one to another. I also use the flag colour to link similar groupings. Contexts are also useful but they are more for multiple persistent attributes of a task a bit like tags. I use stars to denote active/non-active tasks within the day i.e. if it's starred it's pending maybe a call back or a chase up on a message left for example. I supplement the star status with faded formatting to show it's on the back burner. I have views which exclude the starred tasks to help with focus on what I can do now. At about lunch time I usually filter the starred tasks back in.
