Coincidentally, I am just coming to the point of using printing
regularly and am, too, finding the presentation less than ideal.

I would not expect there to ever be a beautiful, professional-looking
print function (I think even the PocketMod thing is oddly overkill-y).

The Advanced button in the print dialog gives some control over what
is printed, but I've found the format to be inadequate.

Can you articulate more fully what your requirements are? What you're
printing, who the audience is, what they're expecting to see? What
would you like MLO to actually give you if you could just wave a magic
wand?

Also, when you say you've never seen anyone successfully modify the
CSS, do you mean you have seen someone attempt and fail or you're not
aware of anyone actually modifying the CSS?
