I'm sending this to the main group because it's really not about the
beta anymore....
For anyone that has been following my use model on Android, I wanted
to give a quick update of something that is working well.
I use Starred and Goals for my "importance". Weekly is around one
week out (always revolving, rather than 'by Friday'), etc. Starred is
roughly today. (If they have exact deadlines I use due dates and reminders).
Recently I decided I want all of my recurring "routine" tasks
together, so I simply put (d) (w) (x) (y) in front of the titles. (x)
is for month because it sorts alphabetically between the others :)
For executing:
Now I have the following sort in most of my Android views: 1) Starred
2) Goal 3) Caption
This puts Starred first (sorted by goal, but all my Starred are
usually Weekly goals because that's what I pick from), Weekly next ,
etc, then within each of those, my daily are at the top, weekly
recurring next, etc.
Because most of my routine tasks are not urgent, I don't Star them in
the morning. That way I can go through my Starred tasks first and
then start making sure I've done my daily tasks after.
This works great for everything but Active by Context. I'm trying to
find a way to effectively filter out the stuff I don't want to see on
that one. I'd like to be able to see the Errands that are Starred or
Errands that are goals, for example. For example, I really do need
to put my car title in the safety deposit box but it's been on the
list for three years, I probably am not going to do it,
today. (Obviously, part of this is a definition problem, because
I've not broken it down enough, since the car title isn't in the car,
neither is the key to the deposit box, and I don't even know if we
want to keep a safety deposit box at that bank anymore. You get the
idea...) In any case, there are a lot of tasks that I don't want to
do, and Android doesn't have filtering by Goal/Starred yet so I'm
going to have to get creative.
For planning:
- I use the desktop "by Goal" to drag things around where I want them
to be for the week. All of my regular-use desktop views have a
special advanced criteria that forces anything in Inbox into the view
even if it is not actually Starred, context-ed, etc so that I'm
forced to process those tasks.
- I use reminders for any tasks that I don't want to see in my daily
views but can't afford to forget. For example, I buy a lot of deals
(SeizeTheDeal, LivingSocial, etc). I put the start date one month
before the deadline, and a reminder two weeks before, unless it is
something that takes a lot of lead time. (I have a template for each
deal site that I copy). Those are neither "Goals" nor in Inbox, so
they get a reminder.
It's still evolving and would love ideas if you are using something similar!!
