my two cents - I see the solution to the laptop with a keyboard versus a tiny portable and deeply desirable viewing device being this: a mobile phone with the power of a PC and a docking station. Eventually, your phone will be your laptop.
Consequently, I think the focus should be on a desktop app and portable app with a common code base and common functionality. For me, I use my blackberry mlo as a collector when i am in meetings or walking around.
