Starting at 2:44PM GMT on November 10, 2011 there was a service disruption for MLO-Cloud. Some of MLO-Cloud users had difficulties to connect to the Cloud. The functionality was fully restored in a few hours after initial report. Now that we have fully analyzed the situation we would like to share with you our summary of the event.
One of our Cloud servers started to report errors while processing heavy requests. This server processed some requests without problems but failed with other requests. To monitor MLO-Cloud service health we are using specially designed alarm system which should inform the technical specialists immediately if there are any problems with the Could. However in this situation the alarm system did not send any messages for some time because the server processed all the requests from monitoring system without errors (but failed with real data). The problem with the server was fixed after receiving the alarm message. After fixing of the problem we have also performed additional tests on the Cloud servers. The data of the customers was not affected and the Cloud is working normally now. As a result of the analyzing of the situation we have improved our alarm system for better monitoring of the Cloud health. I would like to say a few words about technical details of MLO-Cloud. We are using Amazon Web Services (AWS) for building our MLO-Cloud infrastructure. AWS data centers are located in USA and well known for its readability and high performance. So we built our MLO-Cloud environment using secure and robust Unix servers located in AWS data centers. This is the first serious incident since June 2010 when we first started our Cloud service. We would like to apologize for any inconveniences caused by this event. We know how critical Cloud reliability is to our customers and we will do everything we can to learn from this event and use it to improve our service.
