Because Google did it :-) I like the ability to pin tabs in Chrome because I can go by the icon for those tabs that I have always sticking around, such as Gmail.
I do find it handy to pin my All Tasks tab in MLO, because I never put anything else there, and I already know what it is. But I have several more tabs that I would pin if I had an icon to put on them so that I could tell them apart. My brain just doesn't keep track of the order of several tabs, though it can handle one :-) personally, though I wouldn't want to have the title on my pinned tabs because for me one of the primary benefits is saving space, but I would support it being an option.
