Philip:

I'm using wine-1.5.30 on Ubuntu 13.04. MLO seems to work for me (with one
minor GUI issue associated with the pulldown menus under the new tabs),
though in the past I have received some Access violations. Have you
installed msxml3? If you run winecfg within the prefix you've installed
MLO into, does it say "Windows XP" on the Applications Tab --> Windows
Version?

Also, when you installed it (or upgraded to that version), did you use the
installer or simply overwrite the .exe file?

Finally, what else do you have running under wine?

If you install a new instance in its own prefix (use "env
WINEPREFIX=/home/_____/wine-MLO" before the command), do you get the same
results?
