Hello Aidan, I take it you've bought the iPad version of My Life Organized, rather than the updated iPhone version 2: MLO2. You're right, as far as I know, nobody's written a manual (though there is one for the desktop version, which would introduce you to the concepts). As an iPad user myself, I can write some notes against your specific questions, though:
Can someone help with some basics? - You've come to the right place. First thing is to understand that MLO is used for creating an outline, much like a folder structure in Windows Explorer (or the Mac equivalent?), where you can group tasks together into a hierarchical structure of projects and sub-projects. The to-do views then show a flat (non-hierarchical) list of tasks which match specified criteria (eg active actions are ones which don't have sub-tasks, are incomplete and past their start dates). You can add new tasks by pressing the "+ in a box" button on the left of the top bar and add new sub-tasks by pressing the "+ in two layered boxes" button right next to it. - How do I create more blue "folders" like the "Inbox" ? - Select the item, then tap the "i" (task information) button on the right of the top bar. Under "More Details" you'll find a "Folder" switch, which changes an item from a task to a folder, just like the In box. - How do I create due dates etc. on a Task ?... when I click on a Task, the only details I can see are the "Notes" panel for free text. I know there must be due dates, as the filters etc. suggest so. - Other parameters, such as Dates and Contexts, are also listed under the "i" button. - How do I add "Contexts" to a Task : I can see them in the screenshots, but I've tried tapping, swiping, tapping & hold, clicking on the Start & the little "Note" icon on the RHS of the Task row, double-tapping.... can't figure out how it's supposed to work. - Gestures, such as swiping or tap & hold, are coming in MLO2, which is now available on the iPhone and can be trialed on your iPad for free. Contexts can be assigned to tasks by using the "i" button (you're going to find that button useful!), but first you need to set up a list of Contexts. The list can be set up by going to the Views pane on the left-hand side and selecting "Contexts & Locations" - Then add a new Context by pressing the "+" button. When you've created a Context you can select it in the Contexts and Locations list to group other Contexts with it, set a location for it and define whether you're going to see related tasks in your to do list. - How do I activate one of the "Profiles" - there is only one "Default" profile listed in the app ... the blurb suggests there's a "GTD" profile... how can I find it ? - You can create profiles, which are effectively new MLO outlines. The desktop version of MLO comes with some example templates, one of which is designed to look like GTD. There are no templates with the iPad version, but then pre-defined templates only take you so far before you have to set up an outline which makes sense to you. Personally I've set up my own structure which uses Contexts like GTD, but which groups tasks into Roles and Goals / Projects, more like Stephen Covey's 7 Habits system. The iPad version gives you a fully-functioning, hierarchical task list, but the full desktop version makes it much easier to manage a large list and has several other features (such as hyperlinks and synchronisation with Outlook). - What do the various options in settings mean... what are "persistent task details" ? what does "Auto Update TODO" mean ? What are "Closed Contexts, and should I turn on/off including them ? - General - Persistent Task Details means the menu under the "i" button stays visible until you press the "Close" button, so you can edit task details for multiple tasks. Synchronisation only works if you have a desktop copy of MLO to synchronise with. I actually can't remember what a Closed Context is, because I don't use that feature. - Is there any description of how to synchronize it with MLO for windows desktop ? - The User Guide for MLO for Windows is available from the Support page on www.MyLifeOrganized.net. Here's a link to that support page: http://www.mylifeorganized.net/support/index.htm I hope this helps. If it does and you decide you like MLO on the iPad, then take a look at MLO2 for iPhone. It's already better and easier to navigate, so the iPad version should be excellent when that's released. As someone who's bought version 1 for the iPad, I'm sure you'll be offered a substantial discount for MLO2 once it's been developed and released.
