John, I share your difficulty.
This is what I'm currently trying to create some order in my ToDo's: Flags based on the Eisenhower 4 quadrants + a Today flag, and a view to group your the To-Do's on these flags. (see screenshot) Very simple & for me reduces the overwhelm significantly. Drawback: iPad MLO doesn't support flags (to my knowledge.
