I, too, use the context of "!Canceled" (this sorts to the top of my context 
list).  I use it for anything that I will not be completing, but do not 
wish to delete.  It can be a project or a single action.  Then, anything 
that is both completed and has this context I know it wasn't "finished" but 
rather "stopped".  I actually find it more helpful, since the act of 
checking off an action allows depended actions to proceed.
