Hi, Larry. First, let me try to explain the purpose of using a relative
link.
Sometimes people will travel around and want their task to be available,
wherever they go, so that they can check of something that's gotten
finished and see what's next. The most common way for that to happen
today is with a mobile (phone) copy of MLO; if the user also has the
Windows version they will probably use sync to keep the two (or more)
copies consistent with each other. But some people don't have a phone.
Other people might face difficulties with sync, especially in a secure
workplace where unauthorized network access is forbidden. Some secure
workplaces even forbid bringing a smartphone to work unless it's been
disinfected and approved by the employer. One way of getting access to
your tasks in such an environment is to install MLO/Windows on a USB
thumbdrive and keep your profile on the save drive. That way, if you are
in a secure workplace that doesn't forbid or disable USB drives yo0u can
just stick the drive into the USB port on any Windows computer you are
logged onto and bring up your tasklist. I think this whole scheme has
some cute name, like "portable mode" or something. One issue with this
is that every time you plug your drive into a different computer there
is a chance that it will get a different drive letter and that filenames
including a previous drive letter won't work. So the solution is to keep
all of your files on the USB drive and use relative addressing, which
uses the MLO profile as the starting point and therefore does not need
to know the drive letter.
The point of all of this is that if you are not using portable mode then
you don't need relative addressing; also, relative addressing is kind of
meaningless if the file being linked is not on the same drive as the MLO
profile (which seems not to be the case.
The error message you attached to your email is the one you get when you
have an absolute address and try to use it as though it's relative. So
here's my suggestion:
1. Use absolute addresses.
2. right-click in the Notes area of your task to bring up the pop-up
menu and make sure that the "Use Relative Path" command does *not* have
a checkmark.
3. If you get a pop-up like this (see attached graphic), click the "no"
box. If you have saved your current profile to disk and you are not
getting this popup, maybe you clicked "yes" at some point and then
clicked "do not ask again" in which case you now need to find a way to
say, "no, sorry it's ok for you to ask again now." - I *think* that step
2 will take care of that but I'm not certain.
after all of that, if nothing happens when you click on the link in your
task note, try doubleclicking.

For some reason, I am unable to get the "Link to File" to work
properly. Whether I set a link as "relative" or not, I get the same
result.
The filepath in the notes section shows correctly, but when I click,
it tries to place the "default" MLO filepath in front of the
filepath. In the example below, drive "L:\PVI\..." is the correct
filepath to my file, while the "file\\document\cfo$\PVI-Common\..." is
the filepath to my MLO file.
