John,
I have over 11,000 tasks which MLO Android displays as 9999+. The reason
I have so many is that I never archive, and I keep old tasks and their
(copious) notes for later reference in case I need a reminder of how I
solved a problem previously.
I have no crashes or stability issues. The only downside is that it
initially takes about 30 seconds to load All Tasks. Once loaded
everything is snappy. For example, I can search for a word in all titles
and notes and get a hierarchical view in under a second. Switching views
can take up to 5 seconds, but views seem to be cached as the same view
reloads later almost instantaneously. This is on a very modest phone
(cost about $150) with a Snapdragon 430 Octa-core, 3 GB RAM and 32 GB
storage.
The slow load is a price I'm happy to pay so that I can carry a copy of
all my tasks and notes with me everywhere - I primarily use the desktop
to add, edit and process tasks/notes. The desktop is instantaneous to
load and search etc. - no slowdown whatsoever.

I received the message from MLO saying that my profile had too many tasks and I
was at risk of having the performance of the app slow down. I have 3000 tasks.
I have the latest iPhone with the maximum memory, and I have a good desktop.
Does anyone know how many tasks that you can have before you start crashing or
having real trouble?
