Here’s one possible approach you can try to organize your checklist: 

Grocery *(project)*
      Weekly grocery *(a task with a weekly recurrence set and 'complete 
subtasks in order' enabled)*
             - buy milk
             - buy cookies
             - buy toast
      Monthly grocery* (a task with a monthly recurrence set)*
             - buy Jam
