1. Which applications have you tried using ttf fonts in? How did you try? The application will not automagically use ttf fonts. You have to configure it.
2. Which desktop environment are you using? KDE? GNOME? What version number?
3. Look at chapter 6 of http://leuksman.com/linux/TrueType-HOWTO.html
