Some more info...

If you have IPv6 enabled, try turning it off...

type about:config in the Navbar/address bar and hit
Enter then look for network.dns.disableIPv6 -
right-click and toggle to true
Restart Firefox

If that works with Firefox, you have to disable IPv6
completely for the other apps to work... If you dont
want to recompile the kernel, edit modprobe.conf (or
equivalent) and add the following

#Turn off IPv6
alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off

this command may vary with distros, I really have no
clue, this is just a cut and paste from elsewhere on
the internet...
