Follow-up Comment #2, bug #16824 (project mypaint):
https://gna.org/bugs/?16304#comment3 is the cause of this. Bug #16273 is
related: all to do with observer glitches and default settings hitting the
active brush but not the GUI.
This particular one could be worked around with a temporary ManagedBrush, but
that probably isn't the right way to solve all
