Follow-up Comment #1:
I think it is likely that this is due to the maximum size of our cursor. See
bug #13992
To verify that this is the problem, pick a brush and make it big enough that
the brush outline/cursor does not change anymore. Then draw a simple line,
zoom out a couple of steps and draw another simple line next to the first.
The two lines should be of the same width. If they are not, please provide
the image here.
