as a potential fix for this onto masters. Fixes the problem I saw with loading
bad saved preferences values anyway, since I'm fairly certain that's where
this is coming from.
Martin: if this fixes the problem that you saw when you reproduced Edgar's
bug properly :) could you consider it for application onto 0.9 in time for for
0.9.1 please? No string changes are introduced by this commit. It cherry-picks
onto the 0.9 branch cleanly right now.
