Update of bug #17903 (project mypaint):
Summary: Wasted screen space and docking area. => Sidebars:
reduce vertical screen space use, retain/improve discoverability and feedback

Follow-up Comment #1:
Left side docks are basically aping Inkscape, and somehow they seem more
natural to me. Ideally we'd have two docks, left and right, and the ability to
drag between them. I've raqised that separately at bug #17904.

Thanks for the feedback. IMO a few pixels so people can tell what a tool is
and so there's a sort of visual punctuation when docked between things that
would otherwise cluster up quite confusingly isn't 'wasted' space for new
users. However, nobody much likes the repetition which is visible when the
tool windows are snapped free though.
The patterns I've been following are

http://designinginterfaces.com/firstedition/Movable_Panels
What about a thinner drag strip with no text, a relief border and perhaps a
grab decoration to make it "afford moving". As for the buttons, possibly they
could be shrunk even more or replaced with with a context menu or dropdown.
I'm thinking the title isn't so helpful if we improve mouse hover feedback for
the tools themselves. Would you be happy with a single status bar (in
non-fullscreen mode only)?
Another possibility is to make the existing title bar vertical, but that's
quite unusual too.
We have to be a bit careful about heading up some sort of minimal designer
blind alley here. It's important for new users that things be discoverable.
The grab handle decoration looks ugly with the theme you're using, and some
others I tried too. So I'll probably remove _that_ at the very least :)
