Follow-up Comment #2:
Suspect this is a race condition between expose_cb (which makes the pango
layout containing the group labels) and the motion notify stuff (which uses
the layout to decide what group the cursor is over for prelight reasons). In
that case bringing up the brush selector right under the cursor might cause
the motion notify stuff to fire before the widget is drawn for the first
time.
Anyway it should be safe for group_at() to return None since the only other
places it gets called are in user-initiated drags to the group names widget,
or when the user clicks on a visible group name.
Griatch: could you update to latest git head, containing
http://gitorious.org/mypaint/mypaint/commit/cdb047efbde16e6a2e7c62a086c47b5cb8597138
, and see if this fixes the problem?
