Follow-up Comment #1, bug #18322 (project mypaint): I cannot reproduce this problem with my Graphire3. (Maybe your eraser tip is slightly stuck. This happened to me once with a bamboo stylus. It took about half a second after lifting the stylus to reach zero pressure. I always had a faint trailing line at the end of the stroke. Replacing the nib fixed it.)
Anyway, I think your patch is the right approach. It can't hurt to reset the brush dynamics after a device change.
